Healthy Schools
Phase 1
Our involvement in the Swansea Healthy Schools Scheme was launched in June 2007, when a meeting was held for school staff, Governors and representatives of the PTA. This meeting was very well attended and it was obvious from the beginning that the school was committed to this Scheme and for the benefits it would have for our pupils. A further meeting was held in early September 2007, at the beginning of the academic year, to notify parents of the effects this involvement would have on our school.
The 3 Action Areas that were decided upon for Phase 1 on this scheme were:-
- To set-up and establish a Fruit Tuck-shop.
- To provide extra-curricular sporting and exercise activities for all pupils who wish to participate.
- To set up an Eco-Council.
All three areas have been successful and have achieved their aims. The Fruit Tuck-shop has been very popular with both pupils and staff! With some of the profit that has been made, we were able to buy new soap dispensers for the Nursery, KS1 and KS2 toilets.
Various members of staff have been involved in providing extra-curricular sporting activities, which have again proved very successful. Mrs Yvonne Evans has offered the Exercise Club each morning before school to those pupils who wish to improve their co-ordination skills. This Club has also been offered during a couple of lunch-times a week. Class elections were held to vote for Eco Council representatives. The Council have met regularly and they held a competition to design stickers to remind everyone to switch off lights when leaving a room.
On 18th June 2008, we received a visit from a Healthy Schools assessor. Mrs Trui Williams met with the School Council, Peer Mediators, Miss Simons and Mrs Jeanette Howard (Healthy Schools Co-ordinator). She scrutinised the files of evidence and was able to inform us that we had very successfully passed Phase 1 of the Healthy Schools Scheme. So, on 10th July, Mrs Howard and 2 School Council representatives attended the Award Ceremony in the Liberty Stadium to receive our certificate and wooden leaf plaque, which will soon be on display in the school. We are extremely proud of our achievement and are delighted with the impact that this Scheme is having on our pupils.
We have now passed Phase 2, update coming soon!
